Nemo is a fun party theme to plan for and is always popular among young children, but just because the theme is popular doesn’t mean you can’t put your own custom touch on things. For this party I custom created several things, including the invitations, the piñata, and a party game. First I started with the invitations. I wanted them to portray an underwater look. I was able to achieve this using plastic pouches used for…well to be honest I am not really sure what they are suppose to be utilized for, but they worked perfect for my Nemo party invitations. :o)
The heading “Malakai’s Turning 2” and the coral reef graphic was printed onto blue sparkly cardstock (which was measured to fit neatly inside the plastic pouches) and Nemo character stickers were used to to decorate the coral reef. Glitter and small glass beads were glued to accent the top of the waves, the bubbles, and the sand on the ocean floor. Once dried, the entire cardstock piece was slipped inside of a plastic pouch. These nifty pouches worked great, once the backing was peeled away they had a sticky backside. I then was able to adhere these to a separate cardstock print that contained important party information such as Date, Time, Place & R.S.V.P. I included a small “take along map”with each invite. The remaining stickers and glitter were used to add a little ‘splash’ of color, to the all white mailing labels.
The next item I started on was the piñata. The birthday boy requested his piñata to be “Squirt”, the littlest sea turtle. So off to work I went, creating a papier mache piñata to look like Squirt. I used Papier Mache, which is my medium of choice for making piñatas, partially because it is easy to work with and because it is 100% breakable once dry. See post “why won’t that darn piñata break?” for more info on this topic.
Pin the fin on Nemo was the game I created for the party. As usual I recommend using a projector unit of some kind. It is a quick, precise, and cost effective way to make your custom party games and even party decorations.
With all the custom additions for this party, this Nemo party became a unique celebration based on a popular theme.
