Every kid loves a Super Hero, and the hardest part is picking a favorite. For my sons’ fourth birthday, he requested a Super Hero Birthday party. At the time he was especially into those cute stout chunky super heroes referred to as Spiderman and Friends. He really liked all of them, which was great because it gave me a lot to work with as far as birthday party ideas and creating his own custom birthday party theme for his special day.
For this party, I created a custom themed background board. I was able to get my hands on an 8 foot x 5 foot plastic board. It was very durable, much like corrugated cardboard, except made from plastic. I utilized my wonderfully handy projector unit to trace the characters onto the board, then I colored them in using permanent marker. Of course I added in a custom touch of Captain America holding a flag saying “Happy 4th Birthday Christian”. Pictures were taken with each of the party guests, and the birthday boy, standing in front of the backdrop. The pictures made such a wonderful send-a-long with the Thank-you notes.
A Cape, a mask, and a little imagination are all a four year old needs to become a Super Hero. With the capes and masks the party guests couldn’t help but fall into the fun of the super hero party theme. They were soaring and jumping all around the party with their capes flapping in the wind close behind. Since Capes, Masks and a Bounce House were all part of the party plans; safety was a big concern for me. Instead of sewing capes from cloth material, which I was concerned could result in heavy capes weighing on the kids necks and possibly choking them, I ended up making the capes from lightweight plastic with elastic pull-over straps. For the masks, I found plain bright colored masks at the party store then used permanent marker to dazzle them up. For some characters (Hulk, Batman and Spidey-Girl), I used colored craft foam to add more detail (Batman’s Ears, Hulk’s Hair, Spidey Girl’s Piggy tails) and attached the foam pieces with Hot Glue.
Upon arrival I let each child choose their cape and mask. I made different kinds, different colors, and emblems. Just for extra fun, I even made capes for Super Heroes that wouldn’t normally wear capes. There were capes for Batman, Hulk, Flash, Super Girl , Spidey, Spidey girl, Captain America and Super Man…I mean Boy. The kids absolutely loved them!
The piñata was really rather simple. I made a large paper-mache ball. Then instead of colored tissue paper I used Red Tempra Paint to color the entire surface red. Once dry, I went back with a thinner brush to paint black web lines. As a shiny finishing touch, I used foil for the eyes and also outlined them with black paint.
For Safety, I always like to have a “swing zone” taped off so that the kids can have a visual of where they should and should not be standing. I remind the kids that only one person is in the “swing zone” at a time. The rest are safely behind another tapped off line where they wait for their turn to take a swing.
At the time of his party, I couldn’t find any Spiderman and Friends Cakes, only the regular Spiderman. I wanted to keep the party theme very kiddy-ish and hesitated to mix the toddler Spidey with the Grown-up Spidey. So as a last resort, I ended up buying a big sheet cake and creatively improvising, by sticking on a few “Spiderman and Friends” toys that my son had. Definitely not a Betty Crocker Hall of famer, but the Four year olds all loved the idea of toys and cake together.
For the loot bags, I made up these cute loot bags with colored lunch bags. With the plastic left over from the kids capes I made mini ones for the loot bags. I punched two holes at the top of the bags and tied the mini capes around. They came out very cute and overall very reasonable to make. I will be sure to show you in an upcoming post how these super hero loot bags and the super hero capes were made.Be sure to check back soon for this visual how to.

I LOVE the idea of pictures with your "background"!! I found a Superman Metropolis background and I plan to steal your idea, complete with pictures! Love your goodie bags too, but I found some Super Hero Squad show paper lunch bags from Dollar Tree I'm going to use. Great ideas! Thanks!!!
