These are not your average party hats, the kids actually enjoy wearing them! I initially made these Mario & Luigi party hats for my sons Mario Party themed birthday party, and they were a huge hit! Since then, I have made them for several “Nintendo themed” parties, and they always seem to be a cool party element that guests enjoy.
Now I am going to show you in a step-by-step how to video, how you can make these unique party hats yourself for FREE or very little cost! Best of all, I developed an exclusive Free template to share with you. Depending on what color poster board you choose to make your party hats, you can make Mario, Luigi, Wario and even Waluigi party hats for your guests.
Supplies that you will need:
*Note: In the how to video below, I use 2 Cool Colors Poster Board that is double sided, with one side red and the other side green. This allowed for my Mario party hats to be reversible to Luigi party hats.
- Red , Green, Yellow or Purple Poster Boards (standard size 22x28)
- Nice sturdy ruler (preferably with a metal edge)
- Embossing/ Scoring Tool
or X-acto knife
- Glue
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Permanent Marker
- 1/8 hole puncher (don’t have that size hole puncher, click here for suggestions)
- Thin White Elastic Cord
- All 3 Exclusive template print outs (template one, template two, template three)
- Hat initial print outs (Mario Hat Letters: Color or B&W, Luigi Hat Letters: Color or B&W, Wario Hat Letters: Color or B&W, Waluigi Hat Letters: Color or B&W
If you are using the party hats as your party craft also, you can print out the Hat initial letters in Black & White, so the kids can color in their own hat letters.
Printing Templates:
Save your ink and print in low resolution with black & white color settings. You will be using these print outs and glueing them onto cardboard, to reinforce the templates when creating your party hats.
Before you begin, I recommend making all of the print out templates sturdier. To do this, you don’t need to use any of the nice colored poster board, instead look to your recycling bin. Find cardboard from packaging or products like an empty cereal box. That type of cardboard is sturdy yet it can still be cut through with little resistance.

First of all I would like to say THANK YOU! I really appreciate the time you have put in to making the templates and how too videos. Can't wait to get the invitation templates. So far I have made the coins, the hats ,the suckers and the loot bags. I don't know if it is something that I am doing wrong, but I find that the templates print out a little too small. I noticed this especially with the loot bags, because the eyes don't touch the sides of the bags. I went to the copy shop and had them increase the size by 15% and it seems about right. I really enjoy this site. Keep up the good work.

Also, incase you want to re-download, I made adjustments to the Yoshi Bag eyes template. Thanks for your feedback with that, it helps me to fine tune the site.
