Here is a nifty gift idea, I love this idea because it is a creative way to reuse sentimental items in a practical way, not to mention the brownie points gained for Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. These are two blankets that were hand made by quilting pieces of sentimental clothing together.
My son has always had a thing for Super Heroes and so he had this assortment of cool t-shirts all having to do with some sort of Super Hero. Eventually he out grew them, but still wasn’t ready to give them up. So they were stored, out of the way, but still in possession. It’s funny how sentimental things can hold a near place to ones heart which usually means they are placed away in deep dark places in ones closet. One day those stored shirts were re-invented to something much more practical. My mother (the wonderful women who taught me to sew) decided to make blankets as a gift to each of her grandchildren to keep them warm during the winter season. Each blanket was made from a different theme, and personal clothing items were used to help make up each of those themes. For the most part the clothing pieces used were t-shirts, sweaters, and sometimes even the shirt tags were implemented in small open spaces.
These blankets immediately became my kid’s favorites. They added so much sentimental value to the once enjoyed clothing items. Now the grandkids cuddle up in their blankets while reminiscing of once worn favorites, and thinking of their Grandma. These blankets are special, and cool, because they were customized with the recipient in mind while implementing personal items.
