So this post really has nothing to do with a party per se, but I wanted to share with you the steps I took to try to win this contest because I utilized papier-mache in the entry. This happens to be the same material I use to make party pinatas. Ok, so you may or may not have heard, that Animal Crossing just came out for the Nintendo Wii console. My kids and I have enjoyed playing this game in the past on the Nintendo DS, so naturally they were looking forward to the game release for the Wii. As a sort of kick off, Nintendo of America was running an Animal Crossing costume contest. The criteria was to dress your pet in costume to look as one of the characters from the game. The result could be physically implemented, or graphically, we decided to take it one step further! My kids wanted to participate in the contest picture as well, so I whipped up a couple papier-mache heads for them to wear as a costume head piece. I took pictures to show how the steps are really the same as making a papier-mache pinata. Except to turn it into something wearable, I cut a large hole in the bottom. Papier-mache is really a great forgiving medium to work with, and I have been able to achieve a variety of shapes by experimenting with different characters and their shapes. This Contest is just another fun way for me to experiment using papier-mache.

Here is a sweet theme that I had the enjoyment of customizing for a Toddler’s birthday party. I advise to look to the theme for inspiration and ideas. I started with the invitation design and based the layout of these invitations on the ever so popular image of Pooh Bear floating up, up, and away by balloon. The invitations were double sided, with all the basic party information (Who, When, Where, and RSVP) contained inside a bumble bee which was stringed between Pooh and the balloon.

Having a piñata at your next celebration can turn out to be great, or a great disaster. It really depends on the host that is in charge. I understand that people can associate piñatas with dangerously blinded swinging chaos, but I disagree. A piñata is just like anything else, with the proper adult supervision and direction a piñata can be safe and tremendously fun at any celebration. As the party host, it becomes their responsibility to ensure that the piñata game is a success and no one gets hurt.
First off I always like to make sure I tell the participants that there are plenty of goodies to go around, no need to be a goodie hog. Even though kids are competitive to grab the candy, I encourage them to look to the kid next to them, and if they have a lot less, then share. This helps the kids to gauge how much on average their bag should be filled. Ultimately the participants want two things…to get a turn to swing at the piñata and get a good amount of goodies from the piñata. With that in mind you can plan for everyone to have both. Here are a couple tips to help implement piñata safety at your next celebration.
